Hi Walt,

Here’s the 2nd of 3 pieces for appraisal.  This should be an easy one for you, but I have yet to master the art of identifying cut glass.  This bowl is 3 1/2″ in height, 6″ diameter at top, 3 3/8″ diameter at bottom.  Weighs  1 lb. 13oz.  No cracks, no chips, no repairs.  Thanks!

Appraisal for Antique Frame

Vondel asks:

What is the value of my antique wooden frame?

(null)

(null)

AW says:

Your frame is not actually all wood. It’s a American Victorian era frame (circa 1870s-1910) made with a wood as a base, but the gold decoration, sometimes referred to as gold gilt, is actually made out of plaster.

One of the rare things about your frame, is that it’s in excellent condition. As you can imagine these frames being made of plaster are very fragile, and it’s difficult to find them without a lot of the decoration chipped away.

The portrait or photo inside of it has little value unless there is documentation of it having an important provenance.

Retail value: $125-$150
Wholesale value: $50-$65

Antique Boston Rocker Appraisal

Stephen asks:

We are looking for information that you can give us on this chair, is it possibly a Hitchcock Rocker? Also what price range could we sell this at?

boston rocker

AW says: This is an early Boston rocker, but it’s not a Hitchcock piece of furniture, rather it’s what we would call “in the style of Hitchcock”

Lambert Hitchcock produced thousands of chairs that made popular the stenciling technique that is on the back of your chair. This technique helped to speed up production as it was a much faster decorating method than hand painting.

Several things lead me to the conclusion that your chair is not a Hitchcock. First, the crest on the back is different from any style of chair I’ve seen which Hitchcock produced.

Next even though the paint is faded, there is enough there to bear the name of the co. if it were signed, as almost all of them were. I don’t see any such stenciled signature on yours in these, or any of the other pictures you’ve sent me.

Also, it looks like this chair was painted over another original color. Something that was done to make it appear to be a Hitchcock chair. This was often done with many antique items to make them appear more stylish and bring them into vogue.

Circa early to mid 1800s.

Retail value $125-$175

Wholesale value: $50-$75

An appraisal client wants to know: How much is my antique teapot worth?

This rare silverplate piece is in excellent condition.

Reed & Barton pumpkin form teapot

AW Says:

This is a rare piece of Silverplate and the appraised value is at a premium because the condition is superior.

Please do not polish the silver plate off this as some people mistakenly do

Reed & Barton was formed by Henry Reed & Charles Barton at Taunton, MA in 1840.

Reed & Barton pieces are know for their elegance and superior detail. They sometimes made their fine pieces with sterling rather than plated silver and those pieces bring quite a bit more money.

Retail Value: $275-$325

Wholesale $150-200

What’s my Gold Gilt Mirror Worth?

Gary asks:

Hi Walt,
I’ve used you before and you are the best. I have a mirror that measures
33×26 with a 23″ round mirror surface.  The sticker on the back indicates it
was purchased from The White House Department Store – Picture Department in
San Francisco. This store was closed years ago and according to neighbors,
this store sold a lot of French decorum. Is this French Gilt wood?  Art
Nouveau frame? Thanks for all your help. Regards, Gary

AW says, Hi Gary, thanks for your kind words, I’m glad you like my services!  The mirror you have is in the French style, and is a blend of periods: Art Nouveau, neo-classic etc.

These gold gilt mirrors had a resurgence in the 40s-50s and that’s what yours is.

Retail value: $125-$150

Wholesale value $40-$65

This is a fairly rare piece made by Villeroy & Boch . My prices quoted are for un-damaged. If it does have any damage Deborah, please adjust accordingly.

Richard asks:

Please Appraise my Antique Hoosier Cabinet.

Antique Oak Hoosier Cabinet

Antique Oak Hoosier Cabinet

AW says: This is a wonderful antique oak hoosier cabinet with what looks like the original baking charts on the inner left hand door panel, original flour bin and green slag glass panels over the top doors.

The only flaw I can see from the photograph is that the bottom right draw front looks to have been replaced. If this is in fact the case, you should deduct 10-15% from my evaluation. It should however, be a fairly easy fix, thus I’d have it replaced with a matching oak panel if possible.

It is a period Hoosier, so the piece is circa 1930s.

Wholesale Value: $300-$500

Antique Victorian Camel Back Sofa

Richard asks: Please appraise this couch.

Antique Camel Back Sofa

Walnut frame Victorian Camel Back Sofa

Antique Victorian Camel Back Sofa

AW says: This is a late 1800s Victorian Camel Back Sofa. It appears to be in excellent condition. It has cabriole legs, tufted fabric and most likely a walnut wood frame.

The innards would have been stuffed with horsehair, supported by coil springs.

As with all appraisals this one was conducted from several factors including good comparisons. Knowing what exactly an item is, is half the battle. Since I already knew what it was, gleaning price data was easy.

Here is another example  of an antique victorian camel back sofa that sold about a year ago.

Retail value: $1,500

Wholesale value: $800

AW says: This is a circe late 1800s bedroom suite. The wood used looks to be black walnut veneer.  This ornate set was a pricey combo in it’s day. The black walnut veneer was used to enhance aesthetics as was the rose or plum marble top.

The mirror has it’s original beveled glass and the chest of drawers looks to have all of it’s original pulls.

The bed, no doubt is a 3/4 size as most beds of this era were and that hurts value a bit.

Antique Oak Victorian Side by Side

Richard asks:

Please appraise this for me.

Antique Oak Side by Side

Side by Side Secretary/desk unit next to china closet

Antique Oak Victorian Side by Side

AW says: This is an antique “side by side” as they are most commonly called in the trade. It was probably sold as Oak, but much of what was, was actually elm, a sister wood whose grain was almost identical to oak.

This has applied carving and a pressed design. The applied carving was an automation process that gave wood pieces a hand carved look, but from pieces that were previously machine carved, then applied to the piece later.

The “pressed ” design that is most evident on the front of the drop front desk in this unit was heavily stamped into the piece of wood by a large punch.

There are paw feet in the front which help the value. As does the beautiful beveled glass mirror. But there is door to the china closet side that is missing. This will lower the value.

These antique oak victorian side by sides were popular in the sears catalogs during the turn of the 20th century, and came in quite a few different versions.

Retail value with door missing: $325

Wholesale value: $175

HWN Clock

Was this rescued from the Nazis in WWII?

Babette asks:

My father would like to know the value and history of this clock. Thank You.

AW says:

This is a circa 1925 and was made by  Hans Winterhalder who was the son of Johannes Winterhalder. Hans was passed the clcok business by this father in 1919. In 1925 He formed the business which made your clock.

“H. Winterhalder AG Neustadt (HAWINA)”. The trademarks were HWN andHAWINA.
His goal was to make good quality affordable clocks, and the better ones like yours are sought after by collectors today.

As to the supposition that it was rescued from Nazis in WWII (reader; see the second photo above of the text document) one can only guess. There were certainly many fine antiques and quality items confiscated and stored by the German Army in WWII but the only way of knowing if this was one of them would be to have some written provenance.

Retail value: $1,495

Wholesale: $700
